What Photo Makes the Best Cardboard Cutout? Tips for Perfect Results

What Photo Makes the Best Cardboard Cutout?

The quality of your final cardboard cutout depends almost entirely on the photo you submit. Here's exactly what to look for — and what to avoid.

✅ Ideal Photo Qualities

  • High resolution — At least 300 DPI or a modern smartphone photo. The bigger the file, the better.
  • Clear, uncluttered background — A plain wall, sky, or solid color makes background removal clean and precise.
  • Good lighting — Natural light from the front is ideal. Avoid harsh shadows on the face or body.
  • Full body visible — Make sure hands, feet, and the top of the head are all in frame.
  • Subject standing upright — Straight standing pose works best for a standup display.

❌ Photos to Avoid

  • Blurry, pixelated, or low-resolution images
  • Photos with busy backgrounds (crowds, trees, patterned walls)
  • Photos where part of the subject is cut off at the edges
  • Heavily filtered or edited photos
  • Dark or shadowy photos taken at night
